Australia’s insatiable appetite for online shopping deals is reshaping the national E-Commerce landscape, with mega-platforms like Temu, Shein, and now TikTok marketplace fuelling demand for fast fashion and bargain deals.
Shein is another E-Commerce giant that has taken the Australian market by storm. Together with Temu, they collectively gained close to $3 billion in annual sales in the 12 months leading up to June. In the six months leading up to March this year online shopping surged to nearly $32 billion.[1]
New research has revealed almost half of Australian consumers (46%) made a purchase on Temu during the September quarter. The findings come from Australia’s fastest-growing franchised courier service, CouriersPlease, which commissioned an independent, nationally representative survey of 1,007 Australians who shop online that indicated younger shoppers are driving the surge. The data showed 62 per cent of under 30s shopped at Temu, compared to 44 per cent of over 50s.
The figures come amid projections Australia’s E-Commerce sector is expected to reach an annual turnover of $57.7 billion this year.[2] This added surge of cross-border activity combined with a booming domestic E-Commerce market, is amplifying the logistical challenges of parcel delivery across the country.
To keep up with that surge in demand, CouriersPlease has formed cross-border partnerships it says are now crucial to smoothing out last-mile delivery complexities.
Those partnerships include collaboration with top cross-border logistic platform EIZ – a key player in making international shipping seamless. By integrating EIZ technology, CouriersPlease says it’s tapping into digital infrastructure needed to streamline international shipping, ensuring millions of parcels from global sellers reach Australian shoppers.
EIZ became a pivotal player in E-Commerce logistics since launching in 2018 and has since played a leading role in helping global retailers navigate the international delivery gap by breaking down language and distance barriers facing global retailers. The platform seamlessly allows retailers to integrate with local delivery networks and get their parcels to last-mile delivery services and into the hands of Aussie buyers.
CouriersPlease CEO Richard Thame says these partnerships are crucial to smoothly facilitating delivery into Australia, particularly as national appetite for an online bargain shows no signs of abating.
EIZ APAC General Manager Sergio Balmes says more than two hundred thousand parcels are now arriving in the country daily, making their platform’s role in streamlining the integration between global sellers and Australian consumers more vital than ever.
Opportunities and challenges in cross-border E-Commerce
While the international online shopping market presents incredible opportunities, it also brings logistical challenges, says Sergio. The sheer volume of parcels crossing borders daily requires sophisticated systems to manage order fulfilment, label creation, and real-time tracking.
Looking ahead: exponential growth and innovation
Sergio says ongoing discussions with global businesses and platforms are in the works and he anticipates substantial growth in the E-Commerce sector in the months to come. He’s forecasting parcel volumes to increase exponentially as more international retailers enter the Australian market.
